Neck pain is caused by injuries to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, discs, nerves and occasionally blood vessels. These injuries can also cause headaches and arm pain.
Frequently, poor posture, begins the neck pain by straining the ligaments, muscles, joints and discs. This can be reversed if addressed early.
The muscles can be treated with posture modification, massage, trigger point injections and occasionally Botox injections.
Trigger points are painful areas in the muscles and have typical referral patterns as seen in the below pictures.

The joints, called facet joints can be treated with steroid injections or blocking the nerves from the joints.
The ligaments can be treated with local injections which can help heal them.
Frequently, with long standing neck pain multiple different treatments may be necessary.
